Since 2014, Obamacare has brought insurance to millions of previously uninsured clients, and led Medi-Cal to open the door to MFTs and interns. But how might this and other changes in the insurance world affect you? Discover what every therapist should know about insurance, even if you n ever join an insurance plan.

This three-hour workshop offers a broad overview of legal, ethical and business planning issues for clinicians to consider when starting a private practice. Course content includes: Considering whether private practice is right for you; Anticipating start-up costs and ongoing expenses; Leasing/subleasing basics; Sole proprietorships vs. professional corporations; Obtaining a business license; Establishing procedures for intake, recordkeeping, record-storage and retention; Understanding the meaning of “Covered Entity” under HIPAA; Distinguishing your practice and developing areas of expertise; Key issues to consider when advertising; The use of a fictitious business name (“DBA”); The purpose of liability (“malpractice”) insurance; Setting fees /dealing with insurance; Contracting with insurance plans; Electronic billing of insurance claims; The use of “Super-bills”; Obtaining an “NPI” number; Accepting credit and debit cards; Utilizing practice management services, and related topics.


While therapists may shiver at the idea of an insurance plan reviewing a client's chart, records requests are happening more frequently, even to therapists who aren't affiliated with a healh plan. Without proper documentation of medical necessity for treatment, goals, and interventions, insurance may not cover necessary treatment. Attendees will learn how to write notes that will assist in treatment, as well as to meet the expectations of state law, professional ethics, licensing boards, and insurance plans, as well-written records can be a therapist's best defense.

The goal of private practitioners is to make a difference in their community — and make a healthy living doing so. What happens when the clinician is full? Seeing more clients sometimes leads to burnout. Referring them elsewhere can hurt referral relationships. One answer is to add clinicians (licensed or not) to the practice.
